LOW-DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN CHOLESTEROL ESTIMATION BY FRIEDEWALDS FORMULA AND BY DIRECT MEASUREMENT - A COMPARISON

Introduction: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in serum is the basis of diagnosis, classification and management hypercholesterolemia as per current recommendations Adult Treatment Panel III National Cholesterol Education Program. Friedewalds formula used most laboratories to measure LDL-C indirectly. But, not reliable always. Now-a-days, various homogenous assay kits for direct estimation based on precipitation solubilisation using specific detergents have been evolved. This makes easier but costlier. So we conducted a study compare results obtained by estimating level kit also indirectly order assess cost effectiveness both methods. Aim: To (D-LDL-C) that (F-LDL-C) fasting samples. Materials And Methods: Serum separated from 404 blood samples was analysed Total (TC), Triglycerides (TG), High- density (HDL) LDL kits. Simultaneously, estimated same formula. Results: Statistical analysis Pearson correlation showed high between D-LDL-C indirect F-LDL-C. But all ranges TG, F-LDL-C underestimation when compared D-LDL-C. Conclusion:Use Friedewald suitable cases. In showing hypertriglyceridemia, found be better CHD risk assessment management.
